Relatively unknown to many, Costa Ricas Caribbean region safeguards the country’s most diverse and singular biodiversity.  Home to the unique African cultural heritage of the country, the Caribbean will seduce visitors with its flavor and rhythm.

This unexplored region boasts of fascinating and secretly kept beaches, virgin mountains, rivers, waterfalls, natural reserves and indigenous communities which still preserve intriguing and wonderful traditions.

Limon, the 7th and last province of the country, stretches for 200 kilometers along the Atlantic Coast.  Virgin tropical forests and historic towns founded during the XIX century take turns in revealing themselves to the visitor.  The cultural richness of this area is feed by different ethnicities such as the early African, Jamaican, Italian, Chinese and native Costa Rican settlers.  Today, the Caribbean’s diverse population has grown to include hippies, Rastafarians, surfers, farmers, Europeans and Anglo-Americans.

Starting at the northern Atlantic region is Tortuguero.  A must see for all visitors, Tortuguero offers a network of calm canals and dense rainforest filled with fascinating creatures.  During the months of June – October, the nesting of the Atlantic Green Sea Turtle takes place attracting hundreds of tourists and conservatives from around the world.  The southern Atlantic region shows off its breathtaking beaches and natural tide pools for hours of enjoyment and exploration.

Lodging in Limon is quite inexpensive, from cheap hotels to beautiful and unique tent – like lodging, Costa Rica’s Caribbean region is a must for any visitor.

A small taste of Costa Rica’s variety all comes together in the country’s central valley. Mountains, country sides and cities merge into one in this cool area.

The country’s political and economic center is San Jose; here you can find numerous hotel options which range from the 5 star convention centers to cheap yet inviting independent Costa Rica hotels. San Jose is surrounded by several small nearby towns which offer the tranquility and charm of rural communities.

You can find theaters, music, arts and crafts, local and international cuisine, history, white water rafting, zip lining and fascinating forests and volcanoes. Everything is easily accessible within a few hours in the Central Valley.

The provinces of San Jose, Cartago, Alajuela and Heredia lie within the valley and each has its very own special attraction. San Jose being the capital offers century old architecture, fine dining, museums and a very active night life. The province of Cartago has the Irazu Volcano which resembles somewhat of a lunar surface and a spectacular fluorescent green lagoon. Alajuela has the widely popular Poas Volcano which boasts of having the world’s largest crater of an active volcano. And Heredia has the Barva Volcano which is secluded amongst exuberant nature.

Several national parks and forest reserves lie very close to the comfort of the city and are a perfect option for spending either a relaxing day or a more adrenaline packed day for those looking to adventure themselves in zip lining, white water rafting and more.

Also known as the Land of Adventure, Costa Rica’s Northern Plains are an excellent setting for finding the country’s most spectacular settings.

Costa Rica’s northern plains are adorned by small rural towns famous for their hospitality and beautiful landscapes. With rivers, mountains, volcanoes, lakes, and unique animals, Costa Rica’s extensive and fertile northern plains are home to some of the most exotic and attractive landscapes of the country.

Within the northern plains sits the majestic Arenal volcano, the most active and perfectly shaped volcano in the region. The Arenal volcano offers a daily display of fumes during the day and incandescent lava flows during the night.

Several hotels and spas are carefully located around the volcano’s base. From the Five Star Hotel Arenal Kioro with its private therapeutic Hot Spings to other low budget accommodations, tourists have a wide variety of choice as to where to relax and rejuvenate during their stay.

Right next to the Arenal Volcano is the Arenal Lake, the largest in Costa Rica. This lake provides hydroelectric energy and irrigates great part of the country. It also serves as a great activities and fishing place for locals as well as tourists. Windsurfing, Jet Skiing and kayaking are just a few water sports that are carried out on the lake. Its cool refreshing waters as well as its intriguing flora and fauna delight tourists year round.

For more active tourists looking for adventure, the northern plains also offer white water rafting on the Sarapiqui River, zip lining through lush canopy, rappelling, mountain biking, hiking, bungee jumping and much more.
