Relatively unknown to many, Costa Ricas Caribbean region safeguards the country’s most diverse and singular biodiversity. Home to the unique African cultural heritage of the country, the Caribbean will seduce visitors with its flavor and rhythm.
This unexplored region boasts of fascinating and secretly kept beaches, virgin mountains, rivers, waterfalls, natural reserves and indigenous communities which still preserve intriguing and wonderful traditions.
Limon, the 7th and last province of the country, stretches for 200 kilometers along the Atlantic Coast. Virgin tropical forests and historic towns founded during the XIX century take turns in revealing themselves to the visitor. The cultural richness of this area is feed by different ethnicities such as the early African, Jamaican, Italian, Chinese and native Costa Rican settlers. Today, the Caribbean’s diverse population has grown to include hippies, Rastafarians, surfers, farmers, Europeans and Anglo-Americans.
Starting at the northern Atlantic region is Tortuguero. A must see for all visitors, Tortuguero offers a network of calm canals and dense rainforest filled with fascinating creatures. During the months of June – October, the nesting of the Atlantic Green Sea Turtle takes place attracting hundreds of tourists and conservatives from around the world. The southern Atlantic region shows off its breathtaking beaches and natural tide pools for hours of enjoyment and exploration.
Lodging in Limon is quite inexpensive, from cheap hotels to beautiful and unique tent – like lodging, Costa Rica’s Caribbean region is a must for any visitor.
